If you are a blogger, WordPress freak or designer, probably all the time!
However, the last thing you want to do is contact the site owner and tell them how great their site looks and then ask them who designed their site or if it was made from another premium theme, right?
So now you have a few different options.
- First, scroll to the bottom of the page and see if there is a designed by link
- Second, view the source code and scroll around til you see the WordPress theme name
- If all else fails, you can visit http://whatwpthemeisthat.com/ and let them do the work for you!
Here’s an example of how this would work.
What WordPress Theme is That?
You’re browsing around the internet and happen to find yourself on a great looking site. Let’s use SlickAmericans.com for example — they have a nice site that might look like a good theme for any other entertainment-based sites out there.
Now that you’ve found a site that you would like to try and find the theme of, you can see if there is a design link in the footer (which there wasn’t), you can look through the source code and try to find the matching them… or you can simply visit http://whatwpthemeisthat.com. If that site isn’t working for any reason, you can also try http://theseotools.net/wp-theme-detector.
Once you are there, you can put in the URL of any site that you want to try and find the WordPress theme on.
WhatWordpressThemeIsThat will run a quick search and show you a result like the one below.
The report shows the URL of the site you requested data on, the WordPress theme name, it’s description, author and the site where you can download it from.
Once we head over to http://solopine.com and look through their themes, we can then find the “Hickory” theme sitting right in their theme gallery.
Unfortunately, this method may not work with all WordPress themes and sites, as some designs might be custom. For example, we can look at a site like OptinMonster (which has a custom theme), then plug it into the WWTIT search form. What WordPress Theme is That will spit then out a report that looks like the following: (with the mention of “A custom WordPress theme for…”)
When this happens to be the case, if you really wanted to know who the designer of the WordPress theme was, you can simply contact the “Author” and “Author Homepage” information to see if they would like to design a custom theme for your site.
In either case, whether a WordPress theme is free, premium or custom made, “What WordPress Theme is That” is a useful tool for finding the information you need!
It used to be that blogs looked like blogs and websites looked like websites. One could easily tell the difference between the two.

Is It A WP Website?
Do you need to know if a website is powered by WordPress? Maybe you’ve come here because you’ve read wonderful things about WordPress, and you’re now wondering if your site was built using the WordPress software, or some other CMS.
Here are some simple ways to tell if sites are running on WordPress:
Search The Page Source Code
If you know how to access the source code of a web page (e.g. Firefox Menu>Web Developer>Page Source if using Firefox, or Google Menu > More Tools > View Source if using Google Chrome), you can look for obvious tell-tale footprints …
Suppose that you are surfing the web and you come across a website that you like, and you’re wondering if the site was built with WordPress …
First, bring up the site’s source code on your screen, using the methods described above.
Once the source code of the site loads on your screen, search for the words “wp-content” either by visually scanning the code …
Or use your browser’s “Find” function …
This will quickly tell you if the site was built using WordPress or not.
Note: If you do not see the words “wp-content” within the source code, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the site you’re looking at is not a WordPress site.
There are other ways to tell if the site was built using WordPress, as we will soon discuss.
As the point of this post is to try and help non-technical users, however, we have listed below a number of easier methods you can use to check if your web site is powered by WordPress other than searching the source code.
Just Ask Your Web Developer
While this may seem like the logical thing to do, some web development agencies, for whatever reason, may build clients a website and not tell them it’s WordPress.
If you employed the services of a website developer or got somebody else to build your website, just ask your web developer or whoever built your web site if the site has been built with WordPress.
That was simple, huh?
Okay … what if you can’t reach your webmaster, or what if you’ve come across a website that you really like while browsing the net late at night and you would like to know if it was built with WordPress?
Check Below Footer
If the site uses a WP theme and the web theme templates have not been edited, you will often see a “Powered by WordPress” notice showing below the footer section …

Wappalyzer identifies what software is installed in the sites you are visiting.
